Access Logs

A file that records all the activity on a web site, including the number of visitors, where they came from, what they looked at and how long they stayed. Tier1 Services provide all web hosting accounts with access to their raw log files.

Add-on Domains

Available on Economy and Business web hosting plans, you can have completely different sites served from subfolders/subdomains of your main account and each can have it's own e-mail addresses, stats, etc. Add-on domains do not have their own cPanel and all the resources of each domain are totalled up as part of the total resources allocated for your main web hosting account.

Auto Responders

Auto-responders allow you to automatically return a pre-set message whenever a selected mailbox receives a message. It will also notify a selected mailbox of the receipt and response. This is a good feature to use if you're on vacation, if you don't check your mail frequently, or if you would like to create an automated response to frequently asked questions, such as pricing or hours of operation.

Backups

A backup is a way preserving copies of files to keep a record of your web site at a particular point in time. Backups are made by us each day on an incremental basis and each week on a full basis, however, when we do a back-up it is of the entire server and all accounts on it, as well as operating system. This is ONLY done so that in the unlikely event of a loss of server and all data, we may immediately restore the entire server data to another server without loss of data. No guarantee's are made of any kind as to the integrity of these backups.

We do not provide individual backups for individual accounts, nor are we able to selectively extract a single accounts data from our backups. All customers are strongly advised to regularly download their own backups from their control panel where a zipped archive is provided daily of all account files and databases.

Cgi-bin

The most common name of a directory on a web server in which CGI (Common Gateway Interface) programs are stored. A CGI script allows a program to be run on your server which can output dynamic information. Some examples of cgi scripts are: hit counters, mail forms, search pages and guestbooks. Every Tier1 Services web hosting account includes your own personal CGI-BIN.

CLAM / Amavis Active Anti Virus

Wouldn't it be nice to ensure attachments coming via email are scanned for viruses before they reach your system? Well - that is what these packages are for. They reside on the server that handles your incoming mails. When an e-mail arrives, instead of being delivered via procmail directly, it is parsed through a script that extracts all attachments from the e-mail, unpacks (if needed) and scans them using professional virus scanner programs.

Control Panel

Your cPanel - Control Panel, provides a user-friendly web management system that allows you to control your web site from a web browser. You can read your e-mail, add/remove POP3 accounts, setup autoresponders and forwarders, add subdomains, create mysql databases, custom error pages, download backups, create ftp accounts, view site statistics, install the included One-Click Install scripts such as shopping carts, forums, and more. To access it enter http://your-name.com/cpanel/ in your browser and enter your username and password when prompted.

Data Transfer (Bandwidth)

Whenever a visitor comes to your web site, data composed of web pages, images (jpeg, gif, png, etc.), sound clips, cgi scripts or anything else on your web site that can be viewed or downloaded by visitors is sent from our web servers to your visitor's computer. All this requested data added together equals your total data transfer. The more visitors you have, the higher data transfer limit you'll need. You can always buy additional data transfer or upgrade your web hosting plan as your web site traffic increases.

Default (catch-all) E-mail

Allows you to collect mis-addressed messages that may be sent to your domain name. This means as long as the @your-name.com is proper even typos in the user name will still be captured and not refused.(i.e., wrongname@your-name.com) and delivered to a specific e-mail account that you designate like default@your-name.com.

Disk Space for storing files

Your web site consists of text, graphics, sound, video or other files that occupy disk space on a server. If you already have this data on your computer, check the combined size of those files to help you select a hosting package with enough or more disk space. You can always buy additional disk space or upgrade your web hosting plan as your web site content increases.

Domain Name

A domain name is also called a web address. Like an easily remembered street address, it can help people find you online. You can register your own name, your company's name, key words to describe your business, or even a short phrase - whatever will make your web address easy to remember for your friends or customers. Once your domain is registered, you can build a public web site at your own web address (e.g., www.your-name.com) with matching e-mail accounts (e.g., you@your-name.com, business@your-name.com). and matching subdomains (e.g., forum.your-name.com, sales.your-name.com).

Domain Name Transfer

When a domain name (web site) is moved from one Internet address to another, the new address must be recorded by the domain registrar to allow Internet Domain Name Servers to point to the new location.
Tier1 Services nameservers are:

  • ns1.tier1services.com
  • ip address: 209.50.237.146
  •
  • ns2.tier1services.com
  • ip address: 209.50.237.147

Please note that after changing your nameservers at your domain registrar it can take up to 72 hours for servers world wide to update your domain's new location. This is known as propagation.

E-mail Accounts

All Tier1 Services web hosting accounts allow you to create multiple e-mail accounts for yourself, friends and associates with your own domain name, such as you@your-name.com, business@your-name.com, and family@your-name.com.

E-mail Aliases/Forwarding

You can use any alias in front of your domain, like: support@yoursite.com, sales@yoursite.com. You can have e-mail messages re directed to a specific e-mail account, for example, sales@your-name.com could be directed to you@hotmail.com and fred@your-name.com directed to wilma@herisp.com. These aliases/forwards can be added or deleted at any time.

Error Pages

You can create personalized error pages to end visitor confusion and direct people to new pages. A "404 not found" page is displayed when a visitor tries to view a page that doesn't exist or has been moved. Instead of a generic "page not found" message, you can tell visitors where an old page has moved and how to find the new content. Custom error pages can be managed by editing the .htaccess file.

File Manager

The File Manager, accessible through your cPanel Control Panel, allows you to manage your web site from your browser, rather than using an FTP tool or other third-party application. You can upload, create, edit, copy, rename, and delete files, organize files in folders, and change file permissions. While not as sophisticated as most FTP tools, File Manager is free and gives you all the basic functionality necessary to manage your web site.

FrontPage®

Microsoft® FrontPage®, is a software program for creating and managing web pages. You can work exclusively in the familiar Office® interface without having to program, or take direct control of your HTML code. All Tier1 Services Web Hosting packages support FrontPage 2002® upon request. FrontPage 2002® is backward compatible with FrontPage 2000® and FrontPage 98®.

FTP - File Transfer Protocol

FTP allows a user on one computer to access and transfer files to and from another computer over the internet. Also, FTP is usually the name of the program the user invokes to execute this process. FTP is a very useful tool for building and editing your web site. Simply download an FTP client to access your web site and transfer new pages and images from your computer to your web server account.

Gigabyte

A byte is the smallest unit of data measurement in computers. The following conversions give you an idea of how big a gigabyte is:

  • 1,024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (KB)
  • 1,024 kilobytes (KB) = 1 megabyte (MB) (1,048,576 bytes)
  • 1,024 megabytes (MB) = 1 gigabyte (GB) (1,073,741,824 bytes)

Tier1 Services Web Hosting uses Gigabytes to measure data transfer.

.htaccess

If you have heard of htaccess, chances are that it has been in relation to implementing custom error pages or password protected directories. But there is much more available to you through this simple ASCII file. A comprehensive guide to .htaccess can be found at javascriptkit.com

Megabyte

A byte is the smallest unit of data measurement in computers. The following conversions give you an idea of how big a megabyte is:

  • 1,024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (KB)
  • 1,024 kilobytes (KB) = 1 megabyte (MB) (1,048,576 bytes)
  • 1,024 megabytes (MB) = 1 gigabyte (GB) (1,073,741,824 bytes)

Tier1 Services Web Hosting uses Megabytes to measure disk space.

Password-protected Directories

Password protection allows you to control who can view your web site or various areas within it. For example, you may want to create a special area for photos or other information that you want only your family to see. You can place all these photos and web pages in a folder (called a subdirectory on a web site) and give your family members usernames and passwords so only they can view that special area. You could also create a subdomain, such as family.mydomain.com, that can only be accessed by entering a password you provide to the user.

PHP/MySQL

PHP is a widely-used, general-purpose scripting language that is especially suited for web development and can be embedded into HTML. PHP allows you to do many of the same functions as C and PERL - connecting to a database, reading and writing files, etc. MySQL® is considered the most popular open source database in the world. Fast and powerful, it is perfect for high-traffic, heavy-load sites.

POP3 and SMTP E-mail Access

Post Office Protocol (POP) is a protocol used to retrieve e-mail from a mail server. SMTP, or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol, is a protocol for sending e-mail messages between servers over the Internet. You can send and receive your you@your-name.com e-mail from your favorite e-mail program (such as Outlook or Eudora) via POP and SMTP.

Remote Loading of Files

Remote loading is linking to or accessing your web site files from a location other than your Tier1 Services Web Hosting web site, such as at an auction site. In other words, you can host all of your images on your Tier1 Services web hosting account, then reference these images from any web site.

Spam Assassin

SpamAssassin is a mail filter designed to help identify "spam", or unsolicited commercial email. It uses a wide range of tests to identify and filter spam.

Server Side Includes (SSI)

SSI or Server side includes, allow the server to parse special page commands. For example, if you had a footer you wanted on all your pages that may change from time to time, you can create a text file with the desired footer and place it in your domain. On each page you put a simple include to read that file and place it at the bottom of the desired pages. Detects any page ending with .sht or .shtml

SSL - Secure Socket Layer

SSL is an accepted standard for transferring information securely across the Internet. It encrypts data passed between the server and the browser, so that unauthorized parties cannot interpret sensitive, confidential or personal information, such as phone numbers, addresses, credit card numbers etc.

Subdomains

A subdomain is also known as a "third-level" domain and is a great way to create easily remembered web addresses for various areas of your web site. For instance, you could use subdomains for services, such as support.your-name.com and forum.your-name.com
